Philly Set Go Endorses Rebecca Rhynhart for City Controller
Philly Set Go is proud to endorse Rebecca Rhynhart for Office of the City Controller of Philadelphia. During her first term, which included the Covid-19 pandemic and attendant public health and economic crises, Rebecca was a beacon of ethical and thoughtful leadership in a City too often beset by corruption and shortsighted governance.
Rebecca’s leadership and vision energized the Office of the City Controller, transforming the Office into an aggressive custodian of the public interest and vigilant government watchdog. Her Office’s audit of the Philadelphia’s Sheriff Office revealed that more than 200 firearms disappeared from the inventory and armory of the sheriff’s office between 1977 and 2015—often because of “disorganization” and “poor record keeping.” In a City afflicted by gun violence (often committed by illegal and/or stolen guns), this breakdown was unconscionable, and her Office performed a great public service by exposing it.
Additionally, Rebecca has pushed the traditional boundaries of the Office of the City Controller, by leaning into some of the most controversial, and important, public policy issues. For example, her Office audited the police’s response to this summer’s protests and civil unrest—exposing critical failures by the Kenney administration and police leadership. Her Office has also led the way in budgeting, by producing “shadow” budgets that highlight how the City could better spend our tax dollars through tighter fiscal controls and investment in education and social services.
Philly Set Go believes it is particularly important to endorse Rebecca even though she is running unopposed because of the need to highlight a positive example of political and civic leadership. Too often we focus on what goes wrong—and Rebecca’s first term is an example of what can go right when an elected official embraces ethical, transparent and solution-oriented governance. Philly Set Go is proud to stand behind her.
